SANTA CLARA — November 5, 2026. Residents using Santa Clara’s Senior Center will no longer be charged the previous membership fees after the City Council approved their elimination. The October 20 unanimous council vote, detailed in a November 5 San José Spotlight report, ends a $12 basic and $37 premium resident membership system that had drawn years of objections from older adults on fixed incomes.
Why the change matters
Older residents who rely on the center for social activities, recreation and wellness say even modest annual charges can create barriers when living costs are high. The change lowers the cost of entry for qualifying residents. It does not guarantee that all special classes, services or nonresident activities are free; residents should check the city’s current activity schedule.
What about city finances?
Staff estimate the fee elimination will remove approximately $91,000 in annual revenue. City Council members weighed improved access against the alternative of using that money for additional pool staffing and operating hours. The budget impact will need to be addressed in upcoming fiscal planning rather than ignored.
Pool hours and repairs
The city also outlined approximately $453,480 in near-term repair work, including flooring, lighting and interior improvements. It plans to increase access to the senior-center pool in January, though projected hours would still fall below pre-pandemic service. Construction and operational schedules are subject to staffing and city implementation.
Where to check details
Older adults should consult the city’s Senior Center program information for opening hours, resident eligibility and any separate activity fees. The city has not committed in the report to a completed major building expansion.
